REVIEW OF “INTERACTION WITH COLOR” EXHIBIT
HyperActive Review (Supplement to HyperActive News and Haikus -- Volume 1, Number 4)
WASHINGTON, DC—11 APRIL 2007—I have to confess that I’m not used to seeing art that you’re allowed to touch. Granted, I am inviting HyperActivists (art lovers) to sift through a bin of “While You Were Out” messages in a wastebasket that is part of my upcoming Artomatic Exhibit.
But tonight attendees of the Meat Market Gallery’s “Interaction with Color” exhibit did just that. Visitors at the gallery were encouraged to try the art on for size. Literally.
In the crowded room visitors took turns wearing gaudy dresses that are apparently fashionable and are definitely very pricey – it will cost you between $3,000 and $5,000 to bring one home with you.
After the guests put on the dresses, they took turns shuffling into an annex with a light projector that beamed bright red and blue lights on the gowns. Not satisfied with the red wired bra you tried on? Try on the silver wired dress instead.
Some of the dresses made by the artists involved in the exhibit were, frankly psychedelic. They reminded me of shower curtains from the era of Austin Powers.
The exhibit, which runs until April 29, takes its cue from the Color Field painters’ involvement with the drama of color, light, and the textured ground of the material fabric.
The fashion in this exhibit definitely is not my style. But if you’ve got $3,000 and $5,000 to buy a transparent, wired dress, you just might find a cute dress for your next trip to Vegas.

HyperActiveStyle was born out of a series of discussions I had with a former Georgetown University classmate. It was then I saw the challenge art faces as a form of communication in the Internet age. Everywhere I looked I saw the reinterpretation of the Masters' works as computer icons, postcards, key chains, and even low-cost replicas. The question to me was obvious: Does the proliferation of these cheap copies devalue the originals? Why go to Paris to see the Mona Lisa if you can have an apparent exact copy hanging up in your living room? The question was simple enough. The answer wasn't. Thus I decided to focus on the irony of the commercialization of art in my own exhibits.
